The problem
A paper manufacturer in Vietnam wished to detect emerging bearing faults in the pre- and after-dryer sections of their paper machine to prevent bearing failure. They also wished to integrate vibration data into their Siemens PLC system to analyse it locally and contacted our distributor in the region.
The bearings in industrial paper machines operate in hot and wet conditions, which makes them particularly vulnerable to contamination, corrosion, and fracturing of the inner ring. With multiple rolls and dryer cylinders in the machine, bearing failure can cause severe machine damage and sometimes a complete and costly production stop.
The solution
The client was provided with a monitoring setup based on the advanced PCH 1420 Vibration Monitor, including 34 measuring points.
Scope of supply
- 9 x PCH 1420 Vibration Monitors
- 9 x PCH Input Boxes for temperature inputs
- 2 x PCH EtherBridge Modbus
- 34 x CTC TA202 dual output accelerometers
- 34 x 20-meter PUR cable
The PCH 1420 monitor provides local communication through Modbus TCP, integrating the vibration data into the client’s Siemens PLC system. The client also opted for local condition monitoring using the complementary PCH DataViewer software.
The 34 sensors are installed on the bearings of the rolls in the pre- and after-dryer section of the paper machine. They measure vibration velocity as well as temperature. The solution also enables the client to simultaneously monitor various bearing fault signals, including high frequency acceleration peak, envelope, kurtosis, and crest factor.
