The problem
The client wanted a vibration monitoring solution to protect two boiler feed pumps in a combined-cycle cogeneration unit (CCPP). By monitoring the vibration frequency of the pumps and their electrical motors, the client gets early warning of emerging faults or impending failure and can take appropriate preventive action.
The solution
We supplied a 16-channel monitoring solution as the client requested sensors in the X and Y positions on both pumps and motor bearings, amounting to a total of 8 sensors per pump.
Each pump is protected by two PCH 1420 Vibration Monitors with buffered outputs and BNCs, which allows vibration specialists to access the raw vibration data with handheld equipment. The PCH system delivers 4-20 mA signals to the DCS analogue card for trending and the relay outputs are connected to the DCS’s binary inputs for trip.
The PCH EtherBridge communication module was added to future-proof the solution for an expansion to IoT or Modbus TCP.
